What Is Invisalign?

Choosing clear aligners offers a host of benefits compared to traditional braces:

The clear design of Invisalign aligners ensures they are barely noticeable, making them an ideal choice for teens and adults who want a subtle way to straighten their teeth.

Each aligner is custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth. The smooth plastic material eliminates the discomfort caused by metal brackets and wires.

Invisalign aligners can be easily removed when eating, drinking, or brushing. This means no dietary restrictions and simpler oral hygiene routines.

Invisalign can address a variety of orthodontic concerns, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbites, underbites, and crossbites
  • Mild to moderate misalignment

With Invisalign, you’ll visit our clinic less frequently than with traditional braces, as there are no adjustments or wire tightenings.

The Invisalign Process

Getting started with Invisalign at Dental Art Clinic is simple and efficient. Here’s what you can expect when you choose us as your Invisalign provider:

  1. Initial Consultation

During your first visit, we’ll discuss your smile goals and evaluate whether Invisalign is right for you. Using advanced imaging technology, we’ll create a 3D model of your teeth to map out your personalized treatment plan.

  2. Custom Aligner Creation

Once your plan is finalized, a series of custom aligners will be created specifically for your teeth. Each aligner will gradually shift your teeth closer to their ideal position.

  3. Wearing Your Aligners

You’ll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks before switching to the next set in the series. Aligners should be worn for 20-22 hours per day for optimal results.

  4. Regular Check-Ins

Throughout your treatment, you’ll visit us periodically to monitor your progress and ensure everything is moving according to plan.

  5. Completion and Retention

Once your treatment is complete, we’ll provide a retainer to help maintain your new smile and prevent your teeth from shifting back.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is a versatile solution for both teens and adults. You might be a good candidate if:

FAQs About Invisalign

The length of treatment varies based on your specific needs, but most Invisalign cases take 12-18 months. However, you may start noticing improvements within the first few weeks.

Yes! Invisalign aligners are made of smooth, BPA-free plastic, making them more comfortable than traditional braces. While you may feel mild pressure as your teeth shift, this is a sign that the aligners are working.

Aligners should be removed when eating or drinking anything other than water. This prevents staining and helps maintain proper oral hygiene.

Clean your aligners daily by rinsing them with lukewarm water and using a soft toothbrush or Invisalign cleaning crystals to remove bacteria and plaque.

How long does treatment take?

Commonly six to eighteen months, depending on how much movement is needed. Simple cases can be quicker. Wear time is the biggest variable, aligners left out lengthen treatment.

Will people notice?

The aligners are clear and most people do not notice them in conversation. The attachments are tooth-coloured but visible close up.

Does it hurt?

There is pressure and tenderness for a day or two with each new set, most noticeably at the start. Most people describe it as an ache rather than pain.

What happens if I lose an aligner?

Go back to the previous set and call us. Do not skip ahead to the next one. The teeth will not be ready for it.

Do I have to wear retainers afterwards?

Yes. Teeth move throughout life and will drift back towards where they started if nothing holds them. Retainer wear usually reduces to nights after the first period.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign moves teeth with a series of clear plastic aligners, each shaped slightly differently from the last. You wear each set for one to two weeks, and the small difference between one set and the next applies gentle pressure that moves teeth a fraction of a millimetre at a time.

Small tooth-coloured attachments are usually bonded to some teeth. They give the aligner something to grip, so it can tip or rotate a tooth rather than just push it. They come off at the end.

What the process looks like

  • Assessment. Examination, X-rays and a digital scan of your teeth, and a discussion of whether aligners suit what needs moving.
  • Planning. The scan is used to plan the movement and produce the aligner series. You will usually see a preview of the projected result.
  • Fitting. Attachments are placed and you are given your first aligners and shown how to insert and remove them.
  • Progress. You change aligners on schedule at home and come in periodically so we can check the teeth are tracking as planned.
  • Retention. Retainers at the end, which is not optional, teeth drift back without them.

Living with aligners

  • They need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. This is the single thing that determines whether treatment works to plan.
  • Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water. Hot drinks can warp the plastic, and coloured drinks stain it.
  • Brush your teeth before putting them back in, or you seal sugar against the enamel for hours.
  • Rinse the aligners each time and clean them with a soft brush and cool water, not toothpaste, which scratches, and not hot water.
  • Expect some pressure and a slight lisp for a day or two after each new set. Both settle.
  • Keep the previous set until the new one is tracking properly, so you have something to fall back on.

What aligners can and cannot do

Aligners handle crowding, spacing, and many bite problems well. Some movements — large rotations, moving a tooth bodily rather than tipping it, or closing substantial gaps where a tooth is missing, are harder with aligners than with fixed braces, and some cases are better treated with braces or with a combination.

The assessment is where that gets decided. If aligners are not the right tool for your case, we will say so rather than starting treatment that will not finish the job.

What Invisalign costs in Ontario

Ontario dentists set their own fees, and most use the Ontario Dental Association's annual Suggested Fee Guide as a reference point. The fee for any given treatment depends on how much work is involved, the materials used, and whether anything else needs doing first, so a written estimate after an examination is the only figure worth relying on.

Aligner treatment is usually quoted as one fee covering planning, all the aligners and the appointments, with retainers sometimes separate. We will give you a written treatment plan with the fee codes before anything goes ahead, so you can send it to your insurer for a pre-determination and know what you will be paying before you commit.

If you are covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, we are a participating provider and can bill the CDCP directly. If you have workplace or private insurance, we can submit the claim for you. Ask us about payment options if you would rather spread the cost.
