Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

At Dental Art Clinic, we’re prepared to address a variety of emergencies to restore your oral health and peace of mind:

Toothaches and Abscesses

Tooth pain can be a sign of decay, infection, or an abscess. We’ll identify the cause and provide treatment, such as fillings, root canals, or antibiotics, to alleviate your pain.

Broken or Chipped Teeth

A fractured tooth can cause sensitivity, pain, and difficulty chewing. Depending on the severity, we may use bonding, crowns, or veneers to restore your tooth.

Knocked-Out Teeth

If a tooth has been completely knocked out, quick action is crucial. Rinse the tooth gently with water, keep it moist (preferably in milk or saline), and visit our clinic immediately. We may be able to reimplant the tooth if treated promptly.

Damaged Restorations

Lost fillings, crowns, or dentures can affect your ability to eat and speak comfortably. We’ll repair or replace your restoration to restore function and aesthetics.

Gum or Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts or injuries to the gums, lips, or tongue should be evaluated to ensure no underlying damage. We’ll clean the area and provide necessary treatment to aid healing.

Jaw Pain or Injuries

Jaw injuries or dislocations require urgent attention. We’ll assess your condition and collaborate with specialists if necessary to ensure comprehensive care.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

When a dental emergency occurs, taking the right steps can make a big difference in your treatment outcome. Here are some general tips:

  • Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently, and keep it moist. Contact us immediately for the best chance of saving the tooth.
  • Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces of the tooth. Use gauze to stop bleeding and a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Lost Crown or Filling: Use dental cement or sugarless gum to temporarily protect the area, then schedule an emergency visit for a replacement.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Apply pressure to stop bleeding and rinse with saltwater. Seek care for deep cuts or persistent bleeding.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While some emergencies are unavoidable, you can reduce your risk by:

  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports or physical activities.
  • Avoiding hard or sticky foods that can damage teeth or restorations.
  • Maintaining regular dental checkups to catch potential issues early.
  • Practicing good oral hygiene to prevent decay and gum disease.

Urgent Dental Care for Children

At Dental Art Clinic, we provide compassionate urgent dental care in Cambridge for patients of all ages, including children. Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth or a sudden toothache, we understand the unique needs of young patients and strive to make their experience as comfortable as possible.

Why Prompt Treatment Matters

Delaying care for a dental emergency can lead to more serious complications, including:

  • Increased pain and discomfort.
  • Infection or abscess formation.
  • Loss of the affected tooth or surrounding teeth.
  • Higher treatment costs for advanced procedures.

You can protect your oral health and prevent long-term damage by seeking immediate attention at our clinic.

What counts as a dental emergency

Call us the same day for any of these:

  • Toothache that keeps you awake or is not controlled by over-the-counter painkillers.
  • Facial swelling, particularly if it is spreading or affects the eye or throat.
  • A tooth knocked out, broken or loosened by an injury.
  • A lost filling or crown leaving a sharp or sensitive edge.
  • Bleeding that does not stop after an extraction.
  • An abscess, a painful swelling on the gum, sometimes with a bad taste.

Swelling that reaches the eye or the floor of the mouth, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, needs a hospital emergency department rather than a dental office. That is uncommon, but it is the one situation where you should not wait for a dental appointment.

What to do before you get here

  • Knocked-out adult tooth. Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline, not water, and do not scrub it. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite gently on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk and come straight in. Time matters a great deal here.
  • Knocked-out baby tooth. Do not put it back. That can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Bring it with you.
  • Broken tooth. Rinse with warm water, use a cold compress on the outside of the face, and bring any pieces.
  • Toothache. Over-the-counter painkillers you normally take are fine. Do not hold aspirin against the gum — it burns the tissue.
  • Lost filling or crown. Keep the crown if you have it. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth until you are seen.

What happens at an emergency appointment

The first job is finding out what is causing the problem, which usually means an examination and an X-ray of the tooth. The second is getting you out of pain. Often that means treating the cause the same day, and sometimes it means settling the infection first and completing the work at a follow-up.

You will be told what is going on and what the options are before anything is done. If the tooth can be saved, we will say so; if it cannot, we will say that too, and what replacing it would involve.

Common questions

Do you see emergencies on Saturdays?

We have Saturday appointments by arrangement. Call 519-624-8767 and we will tell you what is available.

How quickly can I be seen?

We keep time aside each day for urgent problems. Call as early as you can: the earlier in the day, the more options there are.

Will the tooth have to come out?

Not necessarily. A tooth with an infected nerve can often be saved with root canal treatment. Whether that is possible depends on how much sound tooth is left, which is what the examination and X-ray establish.

Can I be seen if I am not already a patient here?

Yes. Call and tell us what has happened.

What does emergency treatment cost?

The examination and X-ray are charged separately from whatever treatment follows, and you will be told the cost before the treatment starts. If you have CDCP or private insurance, we can bill it.
