What Is the CDCP?

What Does CDCP Cover?

CDCP covers the things you need to keep your mouth healthy:

It doesn’t cover things like whitening your teeth to make them look brighter. That’s seen as something you want, not something you need.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal programme that helps with the cost of dental care for eligible residents without private dental insurance. It is administered by Sun Life on behalf of Health Canada.

The plan contributes towards a defined list of services at established CDCP rates. Those rates are not always the same as a practice's usual fee, so there can be a balance to pay. Some treatments also require preauthorisation before they go ahead. We will tell you what applies before treatment starts, not after.

Call Sun Life at 1-833-537-4342 to apply. They run the program for the government. You can also apply online through your My Service Canada Account.

After you apply, wait a few weeks. You’ll get a card in the mail with a start date. Before you book with any Cambridge dentist, check that your coverage has started.

How Can I Apply for the CDCP?

Eligible Canadians can apply online or over the phone.

Using the CDCP at our practice

We are a participating provider and can bill the CDCP directly, so you are not paying the full amount and claiming it back.

• Bring your Sun Life member card, or your client number and coverage start date.
• Book from your coverage start date onward. Treatment before it is not covered.
• We submit the claim for you after your appointment.
• If there is a copayment or a balance above the CDCP rate, we will tell you the amount before treatment.
• For treatments needing preauthorisation, we submit the request and wait for a decision before booking the work.

What preauthorisation means

Some CDCP services need approval before they are carried out. The plan calls this preauthorisation, and it applies mainly to major work — crowns, some dentures, certain oral surgery.

The process is that we submit the proposed treatment with supporting information, usually X-rays and a written rationale, and Sun Life confirms whether it is covered and at what rate. That takes time, so it is worth starting early if you know substantial work is coming. We will not book the treatment until the decision is back, because booking first risks you being liable for the whole fee.

Preauthorisation is not a formality being applied to you personally. It is how the plan controls costs on higher-value items, and a decision that comes back partly covered still tells you exactly where you stand before you commit.

Getting the most from your coverage

• Book from your coverage start date, not before. Treatment carried out earlier is not reimbursed retroactively.
• File your tax return every year. Coverage renewal depends on it, and a missed return means a lapse.
• Tell us if your income tier changes at renewal. It changes the share the plan pays and therefore what you owe.
• Keep preventive appointments. They are the best-covered part of the plan and the part that reduces how much major work you need later.
• Ask for a written estimate before major treatment, so you can see the CDCP portion and your portion side by side.

If you are not eligible

The CDCP is aimed at people without access to private dental insurance and below an income threshold, so a good number of people will not qualify. That does not leave you without options. We will give you a written plan with costs, we can often stage treatment so it is manageable, and it is always worth asking about payment arrangements at the planning stage.
