What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped “cap” placed over a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s original size, shape, and function while providing protection and an improved appearance. Dental crowns are crafted to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, ensuring durability and a natural look.

We use high-quality materials, such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal, depending on your specific needs. Our goal is to provide a dental crown that looks great, functions well, and lasts for years to come.

When Are Dental Crowns Needed?

Dental crowns are a versatile treatment used for various dental issues, including:

  • Protecting a tooth weakened by decay, cracks, or fractures.
  • Restoring a tooth after a large filling or root canal treatment.
  • Covering misshapen or severely discoloured teeth.
  • Strengthening teeth with excessive wear.
  • Supporting dental bridges or covering implants.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, our skilled dentists are here to assess your needs and recommend the best solution.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Choosing a dental crown can provide numerous advantages for your oral health and overall quality of life.

Dental crowns restore the strength and durability of damaged teeth, enabling you to chew and bite with confidence.

Crowns are custom-made to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth, blending seamlessly into your smile.

A dental crown acts as a protective shield, preventing further damage to compromised teeth and reducing the need for additional dental work.

With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns can last 10–15 years or longer, making them a reliable long-term solution. At our dental office, we ensure that your crown not only looks beautiful but also improves your oral function and health.

The Dental Crown Procedure:

Getting a dental crown is a simple and comfortable process. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Consultation and Examination

Your journey begins with a thorough examination by our experienced dentist. We’ll assess the condition of your tooth, discuss your concerns, and recommend the best type of dental crown for your situation.

  2. Tooth Preparation

The damaged tooth is carefully prepared to accommodate the crown. This involves removing any decay and shaping the tooth to ensure a precise fit for the crown.

  3. Impressions and Temporary Crown

We’ll take detailed impressions of your tooth to create a custom-made crown that fits perfectly. While your permanent crown is being crafted at the dental lab, a temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth.

  4. Placement of the Permanent Crown

Once your permanent crown is ready, it will be carefully bonded to your tooth. Our team will ensure the fit, bite, and appearance are perfect, leaving you with a strong, natural-looking restoration.

We focus on precision and comfort, ensuring the process is smooth and stress-free for every patient.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The process typically requires two appointments. The first appointment involves tooth preparation and impressions, while the second is for placing the permanent crown.

The procedure is comfortable and pain-free. Local anesthesia is used to ensure no discomfort.

Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice to prevent damage. Routine dental check-ups are also essential.

With proper care, dental crowns can last for 10–15 years or even longer.

How long does a crown last?

Many last ten to fifteen years and plenty last longer. What determines it is usually the health of the tooth underneath and the gum around it, rather than the crown itself wearing out.

Does having a crown fitted hurt?

The tooth is numbed, so preparation should not be painful. Some sensitivity afterwards is normal while the tooth settles, particularly to cold.

Can a crowned tooth still get decay?

Yes, at the edge where crown meets tooth. That is why the crown does not change how you clean the tooth.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A veneer covers the front surface only and is for appearance. A crown covers the whole tooth and is for strength. If a tooth needs protecting, a veneer is not the right tool.

My crown came off. What should I do?

Keep it, do not try to glue it, and call us. Often it can be re-cemented if the tooth underneath is sound.

When a crown is the right answer

A crown covers a tooth completely, which is what makes it different from a filling. It is the option when there is not enough sound tooth left to hold a filling reliably, or when the tooth needs protecting from splitting.

  • After root canal treatment on a back tooth, which is more brittle than a live tooth.
  • A tooth with a large old filling that is cracking or has failed repeatedly.
  • A cracked tooth, where a crown holds the tooth together.
  • A badly worn tooth, where height needs rebuilding.
  • As part of a bridge, or on top of an implant.

Crown materials

  • All-ceramic and zirconia. Tooth-coloured throughout, so they suit front teeth. Zirconia is strong enough for back teeth too.
  • Porcelain fused to metal. A metal core for strength with porcelain over it. Long-established, though a dark line can show at the gum over time.
  • Gold and metal alloys. Very durable and gentle on the opposing teeth, needing less tooth removed than ceramic. Appearance rules them out for many people at the front.

Which suits depends on where the tooth is, how much force it takes, how much tooth is left and how visible it is. We will talk through the trade-offs rather than just picking one.

How a crown is fitted

Usually two appointments. At the first, the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown, an impression or digital scan is taken, the shade is matched, and a temporary crown is fitted. At the second, the temporary comes off and the permanent crown is tried in, checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented.

A temporary crown is held with weak cement so it can be removed. Avoid sticky food on that side and lift floss out sideways rather than pulling it up through the contact. If it comes off, keep it and call us.

Looking after a crown

A crown does not decay, but the tooth underneath it can — at the margin where the crown meets the tooth. That margin is where crowns are lost, and it is cleaned in exactly the ordinary way: brushing at the gum line and flossing daily.

Avoid using the tooth to open things or chew ice. If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard protects the crown; grinding is one of the more common reasons crowns fracture.

What a dental crown costs in Ontario

Ontario dentists set their own fees, and most use the Ontario Dental Association's annual Suggested Fee Guide as a reference point. The fee for any given treatment depends on how much work is involved, the materials used, and whether anything else needs doing first, so a written estimate after an examination is the only figure worth relying on.

We will give you a written treatment plan with the fee codes before anything goes ahead, so you can send it to your insurer for a pre-determination and know what you will be paying before you commit.

If you are covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, we are a participating provider and can bill the CDCP directly. If you have workplace or private insurance, we can submit the claim for you. Ask us about payment options if you would rather spread the cost.
