Why Regular Dental Exams and Cleanings Are Essential

Maintaining a healthy smile starts with routine dental care. We provide comprehensive dental exams and cleanings to keep your teeth and gums in top condition. Preventive care is the foundation of good oral health, helping you avoid dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay before they become more serious—and costly.

Scheduling regular teeth cleanings is about more than just achieving a bright smile; it’s a key step in safeguarding your overall health. A healthy mouth contributes to a healthier body, and our team is here to help you maintain both.

What to Expect During Your Dental Exam and Cleaning

We believe in providing thorough, gentle, and stress-free dental care. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

1. Comprehensive Dental Exam

Your appointment will begin with a detailed dental examination performed by our experienced team. We’ll:

  • Assess your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of decay, damage, or gum disease.
  • Check for early signs of oral cancer and other health issues.
  • Take X-rays (if needed) to detect hidden problems like cavities or bone loss.
  • Evaluate your bite, existing restorations, and overall oral health.

2. Professional Teeth Cleaning

Our dental hygienists will perform a thorough dental cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains, leaving your teeth fresh and polished. The cleaning process includes:

  • Scaling: Removal of stubborn plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone cannot address.
  • Polishing: Gentle polishing to smooth your teeth and remove surface stains for a cleaner, brighter smile.
  • Flossing and Fluoride Treatment (if needed): Final touches to protect and strengthen your enamel.

We also provide tips on proper brushing, flossing, and oral care routines to help you maintain your clean and healthy smile at home.

Benefits of Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings

Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to cavities and gum disease if left untreated. Professional cleanings remove harmful bacteria and keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Regular exams allow our team to identify issues such as cavities, cracks, gum disease, or oral cancer in their earliest stages when they are easier and less costly to treat.

Professional teeth cleaning removes surface stains caused by coffee, tea, and other foods, leaving your teeth looking cleaner and brighter.

Preventive care helps you avoid more complex and expensive treatments down the road by catching problems early.

Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Routine exams and cleanings reduce the risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes that are often associated with gum disease.

How Often Should You Schedule Dental Exams and Cleanings?

For most patients, it’s recommended to schedule a routine dental exam and cleaning every six months. However, depending on your specific needs, we may recommend more frequent visits. Patients with gum disease, a history of dental issues, or orthodontic treatments may benefit from more regular check-ups.

During your appointment, we’ll discuss a dental care plan that works best for you to ensure your smile stays healthy year-round.

Tips for Maintaining Your Smile Between Visits

While professional cleanings are essential, maintaining your oral health at home is just as important. Here are some tips to keep your teeth and gums in great shape:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between teeth.
  • Limit sugary snacks and beverages to prevent tooth decay.
  • Drink plenty of water to rinse away food and bacteria.
  • Avoid smoking, as it increases the risk of gum disease and stains your teeth.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

If you have questions about your at-home care routine, our team will be happy to provide personalized guidance during your visit.

What an examination covers

An examination is more than a look for holes. We check each tooth for decay, cracks and wear, assess existing fillings and crowns, measure the gums for signs of periodontal disease, look at how your teeth meet, and examine the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue and throat as an oral cancer screening.

Oral cancer is far more treatable when it is caught early, and the screening takes a minute as part of an appointment you are having anyway. It is one of the quieter reasons regular check-ups are worth keeping.

What a cleaning involves

  • Scaling Removes hardened deposits from the tooth surface and from just under the gum line, using ultrasonic and hand instruments.
  • Polishing Smooths the surface and removes remaining surface stain.
  • Flossing Between the teeth, and a check of the contacts.
  • Fluoride Where it is useful, particularly for people prone to decay.
  • Technique advice Based on where deposits are actually building up in your mouth, which is more useful than general advice.

If your gums bleed during cleaning, that is a sign of inflammation rather than of over-vigorous cleaning. Healthy gums do not bleed.

How often you should come

Every six months suits most people, but it is a starting point rather than a rule. Someone with healthy gums, no recent decay and good home care may be fine annually. Someone with a history of gum disease, a dry mouth from medication, or who smokes, benefits from three or four monthly visits.

We will tell you what interval we think fits your mouth and why. The point of the interval is to catch things while they are small. A small cavity is a filling, the same cavity two years later can be a root canal.

Between appointments

  • Brush twice daily for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste. Spit, do not rinse, rinsing washes the fluoride away.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes. A brush cannot reach the surfaces where most adult decay and gum disease start.
  • An electric brush with a pressure sensor helps most people, mainly because it stops them scrubbing too hard.
  • Limit how often you have sugar rather than how much. Frequency does the damage.
  • If your mouth is dry, mention it. It significantly raises decay risk and there are things that help.

What examinations and cleanings costs in Ontario

Ontario dentists set their own fees, and most use the Ontario Dental Association's annual Suggested Fee Guide as a reference point. The fee for any given treatment depends on how much work is involved, the materials used, and whether anything else needs doing first, so a written estimate after an examination is the only figure worth relying on.

We will give you a written treatment plan with the fee codes before anything goes ahead, so you can send it to your insurer for a pre-determination and know what you will be paying before you commit.

If you are covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, we are a participating provider and can bill the CDCP directly. If you have workplace or private insurance, we can submit the claim for you. Ask us about payment options if you would rather spread the cost.

Common questions

Does a cleaning hurt?

It should not. Sensitivity is more likely if there is a lot of build-up or if the gums are inflamed. Tell us and we can numb the area.

Why do my gums bleed when I floss?

Bleeding is a sign of inflammation from plaque at the gum line. Counterintuitively, the answer is usually to keep cleaning there gently and consistently, for most people the bleeding stops within a week or two.

Do I need X-rays every visit?

No. X-rays are taken at intervals based on your decay risk, and only when they will show us something an examination cannot. We will explain why when we suggest one.

How long does an appointment take?

An examination and cleaning together is usually 45 minutes to an hour. A first visit takes a little longer.

I brush and floss well. Why do I still need a cleaning?

Plaque hardens into calculus within a couple of days, and once it has hardened it cannot be brushed off. Removing it is the part that needs instruments.
